Seneca Nation hosts successful job fair in NY

The Seneca Nation of Indians' (SNI) Employment and Training Department hosted a job fair featuring more than 50 firms and companies. The job fair was held at the Cattaraugus Community Center on the Cattaraugus Territory in Irving, New York.

New York State Department of Labor statistics reported an unemployment rate of 9 percent and 9.9 percent for Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties, respectively in February 2012 - these rates are higher than the national average.

SNI Employment and Training staff realized that there are few job fair opportunities in the rural Southern Tier; with most job fairs held in the Buffalo Metro and suburban areas.

"Clearly there are plenty of job seekers south of the urban hubs of western New York, and we thought it would be a great idea to bring together area firms, companies, trade schools and opportunities right here on the Cattaraugus Territory," Debbie Cooper, SNI Employment and Training Director, said. "We will also offer a number of workshops to help better prepare people with interviews, ways to broaden their search and strengthen resumes."

The job fair was open to the public and featured representatives from manufacturing, trades, call centers, the healthcare industry, information technology firms, food service, and self-employment opportunities such as the Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, and Party Lite. Local firms included Lowe's, Seneca Gaming and Entertainment, Empire State Carpenters, Fidelis, U.S. Customs and Borders, Finishing Trades International, Buffalo State College, and more.

A few weeks ago, the Seneca Nation held a jobs fair which attracted a record number of more than 500 attendees seeking jobs.

The fair also featured door prizes, and a Iroquois smokedance exhibition in the community center's Grand Hall.
