True Life: Skills Transferability

Posted by Amanda Shaffer - On August 06, 2009 (EST)

Today, I played guinea pig. Using myself as the beta subject, I embarked on a mission to answer the lone question: are my skills transferable from government worker/ coach (side-job) to a post-secondary art, drama and music Teacher? Now, there's a leap, right?! Of course, I have to add the caveat that I'm perusing my Master's in Fine Arts Degree for Stage and Screen, so this endeavor isn't a complete lark.

Anyway, back to the question, so I started to surf around America's Career Infonet and stumbled upon the "skills profiler." The skills profiler was easy, transparent, and quick! At the conclusion of this pithy questionnaire, I discovered that based upon my skills I was a good match for a Criminal Justice (i.e. my undergrad degree...how did "it" know this about me?!), English, or Political Science (i.e. my minor in college...coincidence, I think not!) teacher and based upon my work activities Art, Drama, and Music Teacher, along with English Language were both great fits. So, the answer to my question is *drum roll please*...a resounding yes! Of course, I might need to finish that MFA degree before I send out those applications...

Moral of the story, I encourage you all to play the guinea pig...test out the Career Infonet tools for yourself or your clients at http://www.acinet.org/....oh, and did I mention it's free? As always, I invite your comments, ideas, and feedback on this blog.

I took the Skills Profile test last week and made me laugh a lot. First, my skills matched with Clergy, Education Adm., Teacher-Post Secondary, Social Worker and Fashion Designer. I'm bible schoolteacher for preschoolers at my church. My mother and more than 8 of my siblings are teachers. Teaching runs in family. My master degree is Career Counseling relates to Social Worker Also, I design jewelry and crochet bags on weekends. I'm planning next year to return to study, maybe a PhD in Education or Post Graduate Cert. in Special Education. I always said to my UI clmts. about how transfer skills their, but never thought about how transfer mines. Rosynell Serrano UI/DoLHR Puerto Rico

Ha, I completely agree, Rosynell! I never thought to run through the tool myself and did the bare minimum. Imagine what would have happened if I counselor helping me. Scary? I think so :D

I also took the test yesterday, after reading Rosynell's comments, curiosity got the best of me.... My skills best matched positions similar to an administrative law judge (I forget the exact term/title)....coincidentally, at my previous job, I spent 11 years as a claims adjudicator interpretting the MA General Law to base decisions of eligibility for benefits, and explaining appeal rights. I didn't feel like I made mention of this fact in any of the questions I answered----yet, once again, funny how the test results were so accurate!!... Great tool, and quick to use---I recommend it!
